Flying is the easiest way to turn a good Houston trip into a bad one, and the internet made it more confusing this year. Here's what's actually going on.
The TSA headlines, explained
In spring 2026, you may have seen stories saying TSA now lets you fly with medical marijuana. TSA's online "What Can I Bring?" listing was reworded in April, and people ran with it. TSA then told Marijuana Moment in May that its policy has not changed.
TSA's own page says officers are looking for security threats, not drugs. It also says officers must report suspected violations of law, and that an illegal substance found at screening gets referred to law enforcement. So a passing bag at the checkpoint isn't permission, and it doesn't protect you when you land.
Bush and Hobby
Whichever airport you pick, the answer's the same. Both George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and William P. Hobby (HOU) are in Texas, so Texas law is waiting at the gate. A legal purchase or a medical card from home counts for nothing here. Don't look for an airport-specific loophole, because we don't know of one.
The same answer goes for flying out. Don't carry it to your flight home from Houston, wherever home is.
How to pack for this trip
- Check every bag and jacket pocket. Forgotten stuff is how a lot of these stories start.
- Clean out your travel kit. A carry-on that's been to a sesh back home can hold more than you remember.
- Leave the vape at home too. Carts and concentrates can be charged harshly in Texas.
- Pack for the weather instead. Our Houston by season guide covers it.
What about glass?
Glass bought on your trip is its own question, and it depends on the rules where you're headed. Read flying home with glass before you pack anything.
After you land
The fun part. Our guide to getting around Houston covers which airport to pick, how to get into town and whether to rent a car. Then pick a neighborhood with where to stay in Houston.
Where this comes from
Rules change, so check these before you travel. This is general information, not legal advice.
