This is the Houston 420 FAQ: short, honest answers to the stuff people search before a Houston trip. For the deep dive on the law, read is Houston 420 friendly. For everything else, the guides are linked as we go.
The law, in plain English
Is weed legal in Houston?
No. Recreational cannabis is illegal everywhere in Texas, and Houston follows state law. There are no recreational dispensaries in the city.
Is Houston 420 friendly?
The culture is, the law isn't. Houston has a laid-back attitude, a real head culture and a legendary music scene, but cannabis is not legal for adults. Our full answer is in the Is Houston 420 friendly guide.
Is weed decriminalized in Houston?
Not the way people mean it. Harris County has run a pre-charge diversion program for eligible small-possession cases since 2017, so some people avoid a charge by completing an education program. Possession is still a crime under Texas law, the program has eligibility rules, and neighboring counties handle things their own way.
Is there medical marijuana in Texas?
Yes, in a limited form. The Texas Compassionate Use Program lets registered doctors prescribe low-THC cannabis to Texas residents with qualifying conditions. It expanded in 2025, but it's still much narrower than medical programs in most states.
Does Texas accept out-of-state medical marijuana cards?
No. Texas has no medical cannabis reciprocity with any state, so a card from home doesn't help you here.
Can I bring weed to Houston from a legal state?
Don't. It's illegal in Texas, and carrying it across state lines or through an airport adds federal problems on top of state ones. Pack light and enjoy the city. Our getting around Houston guide covers the airports and the drive.
Can you smoke in Houston hotels?
No. Houston hotels are non-smoking, short-term rentals almost always are too, and cleaning fees for breaking the rule can be steep. The where to stay in Houston guide helps you pick a neighborhood.
Glass, head shops and gear
Can you buy glass in Texas?
Yes. Pipes, water pipes, rigs, grinders and accessories are legal to buy in Texas and are usually sold "for tobacco use." Houston has a long-running glass scene with both functional pieces and heady art glass.
How do I find a good glass shop in Houston?
Look for a shop where the glass is the main event, not an afterthought behind a counter of vapes. Real glass shops can tell you who made a piece, talk joint sizes and percs, and let you look closely. Our Houston glass shops guide breaks down what to look for.
Can I fly home with a glass piece from Houston?
A brand-new, unused piece is just glassware. Pack it clean and empty, wrap it well, put it in checked luggage, and keep in mind the rules where you're headed.
